This work will be directed towards understanding the nature, functions and pharmacological importance of the semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidases (SSAO). As far as possible, more than one of the participating laboratories will be involved in each of the specific aspects of the work to ensure validation of the results obtained. The work may be divided into two main themes: a) studies on the nature of the enzymes: these studies will involve investigations on the specificities, inhibitor interactions and molecular natures of the SSAO enzymes in different tissues; b) studies on their functions and role in dysfunction: these studies will involve metabolic studies in the rat and isolated cells, investigations of the role of the enzyme in smooth muscle preparations, particulary those from blood vessels and the possible importance of the enzyme in relation to monoamine oxidase (MAO) in human p
