Project Details
Description
This project aims to obtain new data on prehistoric settlements in the Eastern Pyrenees, with a particular focus on the exploitation of mountain pastures
as the final destination of transhumant herds. The archaeological project will carry out archaeological interventions at two new Neolithic sites in the
Eastern Pyrenees: the Bauma dels Fadrins (FA) and the Cova 338 (338). Both sites are located in highland positions and may represent summer
pastoral activities for first sheepherders groups.
Beside archaeological works, the recovered bioarchaeological remains will be studied based on new approaches (dental isotopic sequential analyses)
proposed in recent years and for which the project PI. These analyses will be conducted on FA and 338 sites and on relevant archaeofaunal
assemblages already studied according to traditional approaches located in the same area and in valley positions in the North-East Iberian Peninsula.
Further, the project will pursue an innovative approach by developing experimental programs with sheep flocks, capitalising on the possibilities offered by the study area. In particular, it will recover a transhumant herd, sedentary sheep flocks and wild mouflon populations, providing referential data sets on
modern biogeochemical data to identify herded altitudinal movements on sampled prehistorical sites.
Over the next two years, it is anticipated that a unique record of prehistoric occupations potentially linked to seasonal pastoral exploitation of the area will
be obtained.
