This project aims at a deeper understanding of regional growth mechanisms and how they articulate into the national economy. The analysis rests mainly on the Catalan case, as well as on other Spanish North-Eastern regions. The industrial complex formed by Lombardia, Piamonte and Liguria is brought up for contrast. The approach is comparative. The systematic exposition of differences and similarities will allow an accurate identification of the peculiarities in each particular process of growth and especially, of the competitive factors involved in both the Spanish North-Easternand the North-Italian cases. The long-term perspective (1880-1960) encompasses the period of the so-called Second Industrial Revolution.
