This project attempts at identifying the competitivity factors that have sustanined industrialization in the advanced regions of southern Europe from the last third of the nineteenth century to the moment of their integration in a single market. The analysis will be focused on the Catalan case, adding other areas of northeastern Spain and Madrid. The industrial complex formed by Lombardy, Piedmont, and Liguria, as well as the Rhone-Alpes and Midi-Pyrénées, will be brought up for contrast.
