The present project is aimed to stuyd age-related cognitive and neuronal deficits in RHA/Verh and RLA/Verh rats. These are two psychogenetically-selected rat lines which presenting diferences in emotional behavior, as well as in learning ability and in parameters of cholinergic function. The main objective of the project will focus on whether the forementioned age-related deficits can be prevented by infantile stimulation treatments. To that purpose factorial experimental designs, including "rat line x age x treatment" (2 x 3 x 2), will be used. Behavioral evaluation will include anxiety/emotivity and learning and memory tests. Cholinergic transmission function will also be evaluated (muscarinic receptors), as well as HPA axis activity and neuronal degeneration in hippocampus (CA1 and CA3 fields) and cerebral cortex.
