The goal of this project is the development of a system tha when data of a diabetic patient are introduced, it could help to endocrines, doctors and educators in diabetes to: 1) to decide the potential risk of evolution towards serious stages of diabetical retinopathy (DR), and, 2) to guide through the frequency of ophthalmological overhauls and if it is necessary or not to propose another kind of treatment. To reach this intelligent system, techniques of artificial intelligence are going to be used, specifically methodologies as neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, grouped in the term soft computing. One of the main problema of public health is the adequacy of costs. With the new proposed system, a rationalization of periodicity of visits of individual patiens. This fact supposes a substantial reduction of economical cost, without deterioration of care quality. It doesn't exist any comercialized application of these characteristics, even scientific publication in ophtalmology journals that could point out the existence of groups working in this direction; it is for this reason that the project can be considered original.
