Description

PERPETRATE WILL ANALYZE PERPETRATORS OF FRANCOIST VIOLENCE DURING THE WAR AND THE POSTWAR. WITH THE AIM OF ENHANCING OUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE CONFORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE FORMS AND GOALS OF FRANCOIST VIOLENCE, THIS PROJECT WILL APPROACH THE INTERMEDIATE ACTORS WHO INTEGRATED THE MAIN REPRESSIVE AGENCIES OF THE REGIME FROM A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PERSPECTIVE. IT WILL ALSO ADDRESS THE BENEFICIARIES OF THESE PROCESSES OF VIOLENCE. PERPETRATE AIMS TO DELVE INTO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE LOGICS, FORMS AND TEMPOS OF THE VIOLENCE DISPLAYED BY THE FRANCOIST REGIME DURING THE PERIOD 1936-54, ONE THAT ENCOMPASSED BOTH A CIVIL WAR AND A POSTWAR IN WHICH THE LEGAL ‘STATE OF WAR’ WAS UPHELD UNTIL 1948-52. THUS, THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE REPRESSIVE POLICIES DISPLAYED BY THE FRANCOIST REGIME THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE CONFLUENCES, CONNECTIONS AND CONFLICTS OF THE AGENCIES, AGENTS AND BENEFICIARIES INVOLVED. PERPETRATE AIMS TO DEVELOP A MORE COMPLEX UNDERSTANDING OF THE CATEGORIES OF ‘PERPETRATOR’, ‘AGENT’ AND ‘BENEFICIARY’ OF FRANCOIST VIOLENCE BY ANALYZING SPECIFIC CONTEXTS AND FRAMES: GENDER, CLASS, PROFESSIONAL OR INSTITUTIONAL. KNOWING THE MOTIVATIONS, BELIEFS, COMMITMENTS, PRACTICES, ROOM FOR MANEUVERING, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF SOCIAL LINKS BECOMES INDISPENSABLE FOR UNDERSTANDING THE SYMBOLIC AND EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS THAT ALLOWED THE CONFORMATION OF AGENTS WHO EXERCISED VIOLENCE IN THE NAME OF THE STATE. AND, ALSO, FOR ADDRESSING THE INDIVIDUAL POSITIONS LAYING BEHIND THESE PRACTICES. OUR RESEARCH WILL INTERROGATE THESE FIGURES, IDENTIFYING THEIR LINKS WITH THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS IN WHICH THEY EMERGED. THE CHALLENGE HERE IS TO REFLECT ON THE CATEGORY OF ‘PERPETRATOR’ TO DEFINE AN IDEA THAT ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND THAT THESE PERPETRATORS ARE NOT ONLY PRODUCERS OF VIOLENCE, BUT ALSO PRODUCED BY THE VIOLENCE THAT NOTWITHSTANDING THERE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR. OUR STARTING HYPOTHESIS IS THAT, DESPITE THE RECENT ADVANCES, THERE IS STILL MORE ROOM FOR HISTORIOGRAPHICAL GROWTH CONCERNING THE STUDIES THAT DEEPLY AND SYSTEMATICALLY ADDRESS THE ACTORS THAT EMBODIED, GEARED, AND IMPLEMENTED FRANCOIST VIOLENCE. FROM THE UPPER ECHELON TO THE RANK AND FILE, THESE FIGURES WHERE THE ARCHITECTS, PLANNERS, NEEDED COOPERATORS, COLLABORATORS, ENABLERS, AND EXECUTIONERS OF THAT VIOLENCE. BUT ALSO, THOSE WHO BENEFITED FROM IT. THEREFORE, A GROUPING OF ACTORS AND AGENCIES THAT BECAME ESSENTIAL IN THE ESTABLISHMENT AND CONSOLIDATION OF FRANCOIST SOCIO-POLITICAL PROJECT, WHICH FOR THE GOALS OF PERPETRATE IS REPRESENTED BY ITS AGENCIES OF VIOLENCE –I.E., ITS REPRESSIVE BODIES: SECURITY, INFORMATION, OR PUNISHMENT– AND THEIR AGENDAS. FROM OUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE STATE OF ART OF THE STUDY OF VIOLENCE IN 1936-52’S SPAIN, PERPETRATE WILL DELVE INTO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ACTORS AND AGENCIES OF THIS VIOLENCE, IN THEIR ACTUAL DEPLOYMENT OVER THE TERRITORY, IN THEIR IMPACT OVER THE LIFE OF PEOPLE, AND IN HOW THIS VIOLENCE BECAME A TOOL FOR MEASURING SOCIABILITY DURING THE FIRST STAGE OF THE FRANCOIST REGIME. ALL OF THIS WILL BE DONE THROUGH A WORKPLAN BASED ON DIRECT SOURCES AND WITH AN EXPLICIT AIM FOR INTERNATIONALIZATION THE RESULTS OF OUR RESEARCH.
