Percepción del Islam en la Europa cristiana. Traducciones latinas del Coran

Project Details

This project, which is a continuation of the previous one (PB95-0138),makes up a second stage of our research program, it deals with the critical edition and interpretation of primary sources of literary, historical and documentary kind dealing with:a)the cultural interaction between Eastern and Latin Christianity and European Islam during thye Byzantine and Ottoman periods: b) the role of ethnoreligious factors in the making of national identities in East and South Europe. The textual material witnessing these processes is extremely complex due to its linguistic diversity and to the fact that it affects both the inter-orthodox relations and interchristian relations (Latin/Orthodox Churches), in the same way as the relationship between Chistianity and Islam (Arabic as well as Ottoman). This project requires to coordinate groups of experts in Greek and Latin philology. Slavic and Balkan estudies as well as Oriental studies. The aims of the present stage are: a) the texts dealing with the rise of a national identity among the Balkan(i.e. Orthodox) communities and their strategies of adaptation to a ruling Ottoman (i.e. Muslim) power; b) Latin and Greek texts realted to the Christian perception of Islam and their reciprocal influences; c) to show the confluence of conciliatory trends on Christian (Latin and Orthodox) and Muslim thought with their influence over the different levels of the social and cultural life of the peoples involved. This interdisciplinary research fits within the current trend of deep renewal of the South-East European studies in order to review and to criticize the ethnocentric interpretation used in the fields of Historiography and Philology, that exerted a serious influence in the formation of a musleading and distorting ideology about the cultural and national identity in Eastern and Southern Europe.
