Description
"Objective": To determine the efficacy of the administration ofantioxidants on the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) onpatients and on an animal model. "Design": Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies withpatients, and randomized, placebo-controlled studies with animals(rats), and "in vitro" studies. "Setting": Intensive care unit at the Principes de España Hospitaland the department of Cellular Biology and Physiology at theAutonomous University of Barcelona. "Patients": Sequential samples of 45 patients with ARDS. "Interventions": Patients will be treated with either saline or theantioxidants superoxide dismutase, N-Acetilcisteine, allopurinol,metilprednisolone or indometacine. Patients will be monitorized every6 h for 30 h. "Animals": Related protocols will be followed on an animal model ofARDS, the administration of the "E. coli" endotoxin on the rat.Pulmonary a
