Project Details
Description
The goal of this project is to verify the extent to which the explanation to certain phonological and sound change processes hinges on a better understanding of the articulatory, aerodynamic and prosodic mechanisms that are involved in the production of speech. For that purpose we will investigate the relevance of articulatory constraints in the production of consonants, the coordination of articulatory gestures in the implementation of processes of assimilation and segmental insertion, the manipulation of aerodynamic conditions in segmental substitutions and in changes that affect manner of articulation and voicing, and the modification of contextual conditions in the resolution of conflicting prosodic situations. We will use the most advanced experimental methodology, including electromagnetometry, electropalatography, laryngeal transillumination and air flow and pressure masks
