Project Details

Our main subject of study is the public territorial instituions proved to be built before the 10 th centuryin the areas of Catalonia and Valencia. We have identified a net of about 150 Palatia in Old Catalonia. Our initial archaeological research suggest that they were associated with the Muslim institution of the Balat and the early Muslim conquest concepts, such as ribat, qal'a, bury, kubba, munya, rahal /rabat / ryad, etc. and that could materialize in several toponomy derived either from Arabic or Latin. There are several non-evident correspondences, which still need to be clarified both by fieldwork and research. Therefore, our goal is, first, to progress on the knowledge of the basic structures of the emiral state established in the area, and, second, to analyse the public institutions of the transition period (4-10 th century). From previous research project we have already identified the ancient Episcopal siege of Urgell in Guissona. And Following this path we consider of prioritary interest the studi of toponomy terms derived from Latin clausura or teloneum, with no doubt previous to 10th and 11th centuries.
