Recent work on the origins of modern economic growth has pointed out the ability of traditional (pre-factory) forms of entrepreneurial organization to adapt themselves to changing economic and institutional environments and to contribute to this process of growth in an effective fashion. The project will focus upon several guilds (in the service and textile sectors) in their interaction with the activity of the firms they regulated. Given the variety of guild organizational forms in the Catalan economy of the 17th to 19th centuries, the research will be carried out along two different lines: a) urban guilds in the services sector, and b) textile guilds in a rural area (the Anoia basin).
