The objective of the present project is to investigate intercellular mechanisms responsible of smooth muscle relaxation in the human gastrointestinal tract based on the relationship between neurons, ICC and smooth muscle. In particular we will evaluate 1- The role of ATP as an inhibitory neutrotransmitter and 2- The putative role of H\sub 2\nosub S as a neuromodulator in the GI tract. (...) 3- The pacemaker mechanism in the colon and its relationship with putative drugs used as spasmolytics that probably act trough L type calcium channels and finally 4- we will investigate enteric neuropathies that cause serious impairment of gastrointestinal motility. These diseases are characterised with histopathology but the functional repercussion of these disease is unknown. (...)
