Description

The Research Project which is now applied for represents a continuation and an enlargement of the Project DGICYT PS94-0118. The research of our team pointed towards two fields: 1) Search of data which allow to observe the conceptual evolution of the term "Barbarian" in the Ancient world, through epigraphical evidence and written sources in general; 2) Analysis of the interactions between Greek and Roman populations and the several native populations with which the first came into contact during their respectives histories, basically also through written, preferaby epigraphical evidence. The chronological period of the last Project extended from the first Greek evidence in Linear B to the expansive process of the Roman world, the latter focused on the analysis of the surviving features of Italic languages in Latin personal names from Hispania. In the new phase of the Project which is now applied for new members and new fields of research are incorporated into the general topic: 1) Critical analysis of linguistic substrate and adstrate as evidence of contact between populations; 2) References to the respective views of "Greek" and "Barbarian" in a wider geographical boundary than that of the Mediterranea sea; 3) Analysis of the traits of the Hispano-Roman groups who come recently recovered in Palaeohispanian languages into the analysis of political behaviours of Rome with the conquered population; 4) Comparative study of political, juridical and social problems arised from the contact between populations in the Graeco-Roman world and in the modern world.
