Description
Some of the developmental retardations in the first language are due to cognitive impairment. It is in terms of a malfunctioning at he symbolic capacity level that they can be accounted for. Research on the emergence of symbols in one-two years olds infants has traditionally followed the piagetian conceptualisation. There is no room in it for playful manipulative activities performed by infants in communicative interaction with parents. Our aim is to search the beginning of the symbolic functioning, incorporating the analysis of infant-adult exchanges that start at 9-10 months and introducing the motivational and cooperative dimensions. We propose a follow up study on two groups of subjects: normal, and idiopathic delayed children. In broadening the theoretical underpinnings of the acquisition of symbolic capacity and through the analysis of our subject's protolinguistic productions we expect to make some contribution to the prevention and treatment of communicative and speech disorders
