Description
Textual evolution and publishing history of "Don Quixote" in XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries (the period it becames a "classic") are not well known yet. The planned research, which arises form the materials assembled in the setting of the first properly critical text of the novel, intended to take a census and to make a proper filiation of all the editions published during those Centuries. It is aimed too to the registration of all the changes (peculiar readings, titles, headlines and chapter alterations, etc.) suffered by the work and finally incorporated -right or wrong- to the text "vulgata". The study of the different printings intended to a general reader will provide us with essential data about "Don Quixote's" circulation and reception. The analysis of the more ambitious editions from the philological point of view (Mayans, Bowle, Pellicer, Real Academia Española, Clemencín) will bring to the light many interesting aspects to the history of scholarship and literary thought.
