Project Details

This project will undertake research into Spanish vocal music and lied in the period between 1881 and 1906, both gneres being aesthetically related through the reception, dissemination and comparison of differnt models, both those dominating programming and those referring to composition. The proposed time span covers a wide array of material. Until, now, there has been no study of twentieth-century Spanish song. Zarzuela and the operatic output are proposed as the basis for a wider study of reception and music manuscripts and documents that have yet to be examined. The global analysis of Spanish lieder, and the relationships established between vocal genres and song is still an unexplored area. One of the most import aspects of the project is the study of the musical-textual inferences, integrating musical and literary elements in an interdisciplinary manner. References are produced with a view to literary models and their translation and adaption to compositional aesthetics, as well as aesthesic aspects, in their reception. The latter is also an original theme that is yet to be studied. We also propose to closely follow vocal programming on a national scale, a very influential activity during this period, which will provide a wealth of important information when the three individual research projects are brought together. Reception, both through periodicals, and publications and adaptations and studies of the period, will be studied
