Description
The health problem associated to neurotoxicity events (like anoxia, ischemia and several neurodegeneratives diseases) generate nowadays a raising concern in developed societies. The neurotransmitter glutamate is believed to have an important role in some of the pathologies mentioned above, due to an overstimulation of the NMDA receptor. Several evidences suggests that glutamate toxicity could be potentiated by polyamines and histamine, through an specific binding site in the NMDA receptor. The aim of our study is to elucidate which are the mechanisms involved in the action of these substances. Among others, we want to study the generation of free radicals, activation of calcium-dependent proteases, DNA damage and the participation of the histamine H3 receptor
