The purpose of this study is to elucidate the functional interrelationships between reactive microglia and reactive astroglial populations and its correlation with the morphological and ultrastructural changes occurring in experimental models involving secondary degeneration (retrograde and/or anterograde degeneration). This study will be done using newborn and adult rats in order to compare possible differences. The experimental models to be used along this study to investigate functional interrelationships between microglial and astroglial populations will be based on: a) the use of qualitatively different brain cortical injury models which involve axon-severing or axon-sparing lesions in areas of primary degeneration; b) the connectivity pattern between the cortex and thalamus with the consequent induction or absence of secondary retrograde degenerative changes in thalamus.
