(&) The project here proposed consists in the creation o fan Iberian Rhopalocera DNA and Tissues Collection, much needed because of the probable disappearance of populations and even species, and a basic DNA barcoding characterization for the highest possible number of the about 230 Iberian butterfly species. From these samples and results, a deeper study will be done on selected groups to solve four problematic taxonomical issues. The groups to study have been selected according to their endemicity risk of extinction, unresolved taxonomy, and possible existence of cryptic species, as well as according to the preliminary results and experience of the collaborating researchers.(&)
This study will be innovative because it will integrate biological, morphological, cytological and molecular data for each of the Iberian taxa of the selected groups, plus necessary outgrups. More precisely we will study the external and internal (genitalic) morphology, the karyotype of the selected groups with variable chromosome number, and the sequence of mitochondrial and/or nuclear genetic markers. The combination of the barcoding data and the study of four specific taxonomical problems will result in a more funded and precise estimation of the number of Rhopalocera species in the Iberian Peninsula, and will represent an import improvement of our knowledge on their biodiversity and taxonomy, with applications to their management and conservation
