This project is enclosed in the basic research field, and the general purpose is to contribute to the knowledge of the role of microglial and astroglial cell populations in degenerating and regenerating mechanisms in the central nervous system (CNS). The research proposed in this project is based in the analysis of glial activation and glial reactivity caused by secondary degeneration in the rat thalamus following cortical lesions of two different types: excitotoxic lesions by injection of NMDA (axon sparing) and aspiration lesions (non-sparing). Specific aims are: (i) to establish the relation between glial reactivity and neuronal degeneration; (ii) to elucidate molecular mechanisms that could trigger astroglial and microgliar responses; (iii) to functionally characterize astroglial and microglial reactive cells; and (iv) to study the effects of the injection of neurotrophic factors on
