Description
Transhumance is an agricultural practice that carries values and services of collective interest (environment, culture, tourism, regional planning, etc.). This form of pastoralism is associated with the breeding of animals of rustic native
Pyrenean breeds. Climate change (seasonal thermal amplitudes, variability of rainfall, etc.) amplified by altitude and slope effects will disrupt the fragile balance of this agropastoralism. This is the major challenge of the coming decades for associations of breeders concerned with anticipating disruptions in production cycles by strengthening the robustness and resilience of pastoral systems, particularly at the level of foundation livestock. PASTORCLIM is a work
consortium bringing together associations of suckler cattle and sheep breeders, research or support organizations, training centers and local governments with the common goal of developing and promoting solutions based on use of
the strengths of hardy breeds to make the best use of the fodder resources of pastoral areas, and their ability to better withstand thermal stress. The program has three axes:• Environment and heritage: Characterization, awareness raising
around ecosystem and cultural services related to transhumance• Technical: Adaptation to climate change of local Pyrenean suckler sheep and cattle breeds and associated pastoral systems.• Training: Sharing and transmission of knowledge related to pastoral activity between generations and Pyrenean territories.PASTORCLIM will develop common strategies for the local breeds and the Pyrenean territories concerned. It will contribute to the revision of strategies for the management of pastoral resources, the adaptation and protection of pastoral areas as well as the prevention of natural risks.
