BACKGROUND: During the last 25 years, the world has undergone important political, social and economical changes, which have been described as a "globalization" process. Supra-national political units have been created (UN, new economic areas), national markets have been opened-thus creating greater economic interdependence and worldwide communication as a whole has increased due to the improvements in transport and the spread of international mass media resulting form (but also feedbacking to) these processes. From a linguistic perspective, such processes are creating new forms of language contact. The traditional contexts studied by sociolinguists typically consisted of contact situations caused by geographical closeness or political domination between linguistic groups. The new forms of sociopolitically homologous. GOALS: We intentd to study the impact of these globalization processes on the structure and use of local languages, particulary in the catalan linguistic and cultural context. METHODOLOGY: The project will be data-based and will involve ethnographic data gathering in four social domains: business, administration, mass media and the academy. LLIKELY SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL IMPACT: The project invvolves a significant innovation in the scope of language contact studies. It will make the ideal frame to undertake joint initiatives at the international level. Finally, it may help professional of the various spheres of activity under the study to get a greater underastanding of linguistic problems and issues related to their work, and it may lead to development of new linguistic technologies to meet growing language support needs.
