Description

This project is a contribution to the knowledge of the causes of sound change through the use of experimental methods in articulatory, acoustic and perceptual phonetics (e.g. spectrography, electropalatography, perceptual tests with natural speech stimuli). Our research will deal with those phonetic conditioning factors which have rendered several phonetic changes possible in the Romance languages and, more specifically, in Catalan and Spanish. These changes are: consonant strenghthening and weakening, and stressed vowel diphthongization, at the word level, velar softening and the vocalization of velarized and palatalized consonants; the neutralization of the phonological contrast between mid low and mid high stressed vowels, and several phonetic replacements occurring in vowel sequences such as on-glide formation and schwa elision. It is believed that a better understanding of the causes of sound change depends ona an improvement of our knowledge about the patterns of intersegmental timing, linguopalatal contact variability during consonant production and vowel system dispersion
