Project Details

Description

The project consists of several studies in Neutrino Physics, namely: 1. Feasibility study of the installation in Spain of an underground laboratory to house a neutrino detector able to study atmospheric (NuA) and neutrino-factory (NuF) neutrinos. This part aims at finding an appropiate location from the geological and from the requeriments of the experiments points of view, as vell as at defining the technical characteristics of the installation. The output would consist in a pre-project, from which a definitive technical project could be elaborated. 2. Measurements of pion production cross-section in proton-nucleon collisions in the HARP experimenmt. HARP isan existing experiment and its detailed measurements are necessary for the understanding of the neutrino factory beam and for a better estimation of the flux of atmospheric neutrinos. 3.Design of a detector for the study of NuF and NuA. Here one starts from the existing separate studies to which the participants in this project have contributed, and continues with a new design unifying and improving them. The work will be done by a European-wide collaboration promoted in part by the participants in this project. The study is being done independently of the final location of the detector. The aim is that the collaboration will propose the experiment, once the detector design is completed. 4. Further studies on the physics reach of the NuF and of NuA with a magnetic detector are not fully explored. The participants in this project will carry on those studies in the frame of the above-mentioned international collaboration. The possibilities of conventional super-beam will also be studied. 5. Construction of a prototype glass-RPC chamber, which use is foreseen in the contemplated experiment
