The goal of this project presented under the modality B applied research, is the preparation of self-protected polymers against oxidants agents and metals as membrane materials in pressure driven separation processes. The most important problem taking place in industries dedicated to the preparation of drinkable water and tje producers of reverse osmosis membranes, are the destructive effects that oxidants (CI\sub 2\nosub ) and metals (Fe(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), AI(III)) produce the membranes. Nowadays, this effects are minimized by applying several pre-treatments, but this is an expensive solution, and it also detriments the efficacy of the separation process. The research project proposed is addressed to the developement of polyomers whose characteristics are similar to those ones commercially available, but provided with systems that allow to a self-protecting against the indicated aggressive agents. The project will be developed in a systematic manner, including three well differentiated steps. First of all, the effects of the named agents will be avaluated under different chemical conditions. These effects will be quantified by measuring the physical characteristics of the membrane through electrical parameters (zeta potential), surfaceanalysis by gas adsportion, electron microscopy and also the testing of membranes in a cell assembly under preassure, so as to measure the flow rate and the solute rejection. The second step will be dedicated to study the chemical protection systems. this will include the study of masking agents, which are susceptible to be incorporated into the polymer membrane, as well as catalysis systems applied to the reduction of oxidants as CI\sub 2\nosub . Finally, the synthesis of the new polymers to prepare membranes will be studied by using the interfacial polymerization techniquel The caracterization of these polymers will be done systematically by the previouslly mentioned techniques.
