The aim of the UCHRE (Ultra Heavy Cosmic Ray Experiment), designed jointly by the Dublin Institute For Advanced Studies and the ESTEC, from the European Space Agency, is to record relativistic nuclei with Z > 65 from Cosmic Rays, using Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTD). The UCHRE is a part of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) spacecraft, in Earth orbit from April 1984 and retrieved in January 1990. After this extended exposure, the experiment is expected to provide the first statistically significant sample of Cosmic Ray Actinides. Calibration of SSNTD stacks exposed to ultraheavy ions in accelerators, at similar environmental conditions to the ones in the UCHRE, has shown that it is possible to distinguish elements belonging to the Lead, Platinum and Actinide Cosmic Ray charge groups.
