Description

Phototrophic anoxigenic bacteria play an important role as primary producers in stratified anoxic ecosystems, such as Lake Cisó (Gerona) and Ebro Delta microbial mats (Tarragona). Neverthless, the methodological drawbacks involved in their study make their detection and identification in natural environments difficult. Our group of work is specialized in isolation and identification techniques as well as in the ecophysiological study of these bacteria. In our lab, we have optimized, for the first time, the growth (cell lawns) on Petri dishes of these kind of microorganisms. This has made possible the selecction of particular strains of phototrophic sulfur bacteria by means of antimicrobial agents. The same procedure has been very useful to start genetic studies in these organisms. The present work, which somehow uses the approach followed in the previous project, intends: a) to study the
