Project Details

The distribution of the Pyrenean desman, Galemys Pyrenaicus, is strictly limited to riverine habitats. Populations that live in different basins are generally very isolated from one another and, frequently, these populations are characterised by a relatively low number of individuals. Since the intraespecific morphological variation and the factors influencing it have been little studied, the aims of this subproject are the following: i) to study the cranial variation in size and shape, and to determine the possible geographical/enviromental factors related to intraespecific morphological differences; ii) to analyse developmental integration of the skull during postnatal growth; iii) to determine the possible effects of geographical isolation among populations and/or habitat degradation on developmental stability, by analisis of fluctuating asymmetry. These aspects will be studied using speciments from collections by means of traditional morphometrics, geometric morphometrics, and analysis of variation in non-metric cranial traits. The results will offer new insights into the morphology of G. pyrenaicus and will be of special interest to future conservation plans and monitoring of the species.
