Project Details

The main purpose of the project is to analyze, from a social and gender geographical approach, the potential of public spaces for exclusion/inclusion in the symbolic, political and social dimensions. It focuses on three social groups that are usually considered marginal, excluded or at risk: elderly persons, children and immigrants. More specifically, the study aims at: (a) examining the appropriation of selected public spaces and the development of everyday life, (b) analysing the processes of building up a sense of citizenship, taking into account not only the sense of belonging to a place but also the level of implications in the public sphere, (c) examining with a particular emphasis the presence or absence of feeling of safety or fear of different groups at different moments, and (d) identifying indicators that could help the administration in the success for creating public spaces. Some innovative aspects of the approach in this project should be pointed out. First, (...) it is necessary to enlarge the concept of public space (that is space public used with either private, public or mixed ownership). Second, such studies have been mostly carried out from a social and political perspective, and they lack a geographical and spatial dimension. In particular, the analysis should integrate the concept of place and scale (...). Third, the research on public spaces has, to a large degree, focused on the population as whole and, consequently, the results are too general to be used to identify viable public policies to apply to different social groups. (...) The research will be carried out in public spaces/places at different scales in the Autonomous regions of Catalonia and Galicia (...). The qualitative analysis will be the main approach for the research.
