Description

The developmental care programs are considered today the most effective method, that, behind the medical treatments, improve dramatically the neurological development of the premature newborn. But previously is necessary to establish the neurobehavioral profile of each newborn and our pourpose is to elaborate an adequate instrument.
The objectives of this project are:
a) Analyses of our previous results obtained with the Observation Sheet for the Premature Newborn (I+D 2003) and elaboration of the NAPN (Neurobehavioral Assessment tool for the Premature Newborn).
b) Standardization of the NAPN to be used in the Newborn Intensive Care Units (NICU).
For the standardization process, we will assess with the NAPN (a sample of 200 preterm newborns stratified into two postmenstrual age groups: 100 early born preterms, EBPT (27 to 32 weeks) and 100 middle-group preterms, MGPT (33 to 37 weeks). The newborns of the EBPT group will be assessed at 32 weeks and infants of the MGPT at 37 weeks. For the predictive validity analyses process, a sample of 100 newborns (50 from each group) will be randomly selected among the normative sample and they will be re-assessed at 40 postmenstrual weeks with de Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, NBAS (spanish version adapted by our team). The definitive NAPN will be elaborated with a selection of the highest predictive value items.
