This research project, multi-disciplinary in nature, has two central aims: a) the study of the Mediterranean as a "global framework", and b) the study of the Mediterranean as a political-diplomatic project. Logically, special attention will be focused on Spain's real or potential actions in relation to each of the questions studied. The notion of globality associated with the Mediterranean constitutes a "common place" at present. In our opinion, three main aspects serve as aids towards the study of the Mediterranean as a global framework: economic development, management of the environment and socio-cultural relations, bearing in mind that these are interdependent and together constitute a generator of risks for Mediterranean security.
