The rapid succession of innovation occurring in communications technology over the past two decades, together with the dynamic political changes in the European Community on the one hand-with integration-, and Eastern Europe on the other hand- with steps towards democracy-, and the dominant role of economic structures in these two processes, raise a great many questions regarding the immediate future of the present national systems of television in Europe, in the strict sense, and, in a more general sense, in the audiovisual sector.
