This research deals with a broad project of study of the role of voluntary associations in Catalonia from the Restauració of 1874 on up to the Francoist era. Specially, it points to the popular associative dynamics in its relations to schooling and to informal education phenomena. Now, we analyse the voluntary associations life (both rural and urban) within the province of Barcelona during this period. We attempt to analyse whether there are meaningful differences between the associative supply in Barcelona town and the countryside, and to which extent this differences affected the popular cultural level and people's professional qualification
