Stand dynamic (tree growth, recruitment and mortality) will be studied in pure holm oak forests and in mixed holm oak/Aleppo pine forests in the Montseny mountains (NE Spain). By using experimental thinnings of varying intensity, series of plots at different times from last thinning and stand simulation models, this study will a) assess the role of intra-and interspecific competition in both tree species; b) document rates and mechanisms of canopy closure and recruitment after thinning; c) modify existing models of gap dynamic so that they can be applied to Mediterranean forests under selection thinning. It is expected that results from this study will be translated into management recommendations, in particular where the mixed character of oak/pine stands is to be mantained.
