Project Details
Description
The main objective of this proposal is the detection of molecular DNA markers (microsatellites and RAPDs) linked to genes affecting meat quality in pigs. To this purpose, we propose to cross Iberian boars with Spanis Landrace sows. The cosgregation between 100 markers approximately and traits of interest in 400 F2 animals will then be analysed. This design will allow us to detect genes responsible for at least 3% of total variability in the F2. Main traits to be measured include intramuscular fat content, fatty acid composition and muscle fibre types. All these traits influence to a large extent quality of fresh and cured meat products.
