Description
One purpose of the present study is to determine the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideas among normal adolescents in Barcelona. Another is to delineate some risk factors associated with depression and suicide. A two-stage procedure is employed for case-identification. During the first stage, "Kovacs' children depression inventory" (CDI, Kovacs, 1983) is used as screening instrument and applied to 1.650 adolescent school students, selected through a clustered random sample. During the second stage, clinical assessments of the children are carried out. Each adolescent from the smaller sample selected as positive in the first stage is interviewed. We also interviewed a random sample of those who score below the cut-off points of the CDI. The clinical evaluation of each student is made using the DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria.
