The main research line which the applicant group carries out centers in the story of the written culture in medieval Catalonia. To allow this it has enjoyed several research projects granted for the analysis of manuscripts and documents which were produced or circulated around medieval Catalonia. Logically, a study of this kind must take into account also the main cultural institutions which produced or spread the written knowledge, that is, te schools, the libraries and the \i scriptoria\i0 . We're talking, this time, about centering our efforts mainlyin a theme very poorly treated in the studies of cultural history related to Catalonia, that is, the analysis of the educational system which was in effect in that period. We're talking, then, about studying the origins and the operation of the cathedral, monastic and parish schools, as well as the later emergence and spreading of universities. We would also center our attention in the study of the educational programs which may be deduced from the textbooks preserved or from the references which we have about their circulation; the inventory of all the teaching personal testified in the rich catalan doumentation of the middle ages, as well as the analysis of the incidence that the school had in the medieval catalan society, not only in the ecclesiastical sphere, but also in the secular sphere, with a special consideration about the spreading of literacy in the different sectors of society
