Project Details

Description

The field of work is nineteenth century scientific and technical lexis, with particular attention being paid to certain specific ambits such as chemistry, photography, electricity, the railways or oenology, branches of knowledge and technology that attained a notably developed state during the century in question. The aim of the project is to draw up a catalogue of fully-documented neologisms from the first Spanish texts in which they appear. Lexical rivalries and the morphological and semantic issues deriving from the adaptation of new terminology to Spanish will all be registered. The main nineteenth century Spanish lexicographical stock will also be taken into consideration when drawing up the catalogue. The end product will be a repertoire of technical words, historical in character, covering an area that has hitherto been of little concern to linguistic studies. The catalogue will also deal with other issues such as the relationship between European and classical languages with respect to the creation of scientific and technical vocabulary, Spanish linguistic thought regarding scientific and technical neologisms in the nineteenth century, and other questions related to the textual aspects of scientific communication
