MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have become a relevant topic in the intrincate host-pathogen interaction network in human and animal health, and evidences regarding the miRNA role in viral infections are just emerging. \b The aims of this coordinated project are the milecular identification and characterization of new miRNA encoded by the porcine genoma and by some of its viral pathogens\b0 . miRNAs are a new class of small (18-25 nucleotides log) non-coding RNAs that paly critical roles in a wide espectrum of bilogical processess by negatively regukation expresion of target genes of thepost-transcriptional level in eukaryotes. Multiple implications of miRNAs in different processess like embryogenesis, growth and cellular differentiation, and pathogeneisi of human diseasses are in the early stages of description. Recent genome-wide computational screens for miRNA target in human prdict that up to 30% of all genes are regulated by miRNAs. More recently virus-encoded miRNAs have been also identified, with multiple functions, that regulate infection and can be implicated in some aspects like in the establishment of latency, or in the capacity to avoid elimination by innate or aqquired immune response. More than 450 miRNAs have been already described in human where the estimated number of miRNAs could be at least 1000. In mammals nearly all miRNAs are conserved in closely related species, and many have homologs in distant species. So the identification of miRNAs in farm animals is actually practicable. However, the miRNAs characterized in domestic animals are still scarce: in porcine only one study has been published in wich 7 miRNAs have been described and confirmed, although other 47 have been inferred by sequence homology and submitted to the database. \b The ultimate goal of this coordinated project is the molecular identification, sequencing and maping of porcine miRNAs and the identification of virus-encoded miRNAs affecting porcine, as porcine circovirus (...)\b
