Description

This proposal applies for funding for three years in order to set up an experimental procedure to measure in situ the neutron spectra in mixed field, with an intense and energetic gamma component, produced by a linear electron accelerator. This procedure consists mainly of 8 polyethylene spheres, of diameters between 6.35 cm (2.5 inch) and 30.48 cm (12 inch) with thermal sensitive neutron detectors located at their centre. The four small spheres (up to 5 inch diameter) could be introduced inside a cadmium cap, with 1.5 mm thich, to obtain information about thermal and epithermal neutron components of the spectre subject to measurement. A Varian linear electron accelerator of 20 MeV, localised at the Germans Trials I Pujol Hospital of our University will be used. From the measurements obtained with the two proposed multisphere systems and from the previous calculation of their response functions, it is possible to determine the neutron fluence spectre in the considered point using an own unfolding computer program, developed by our group. This program has been validated using ISO reference spectra and has participated, recently, in an European intercomparison exercise obtaining quite satisfactory results. As a complement of the experimental method, a theoretical simulation using the Monte Carlo codes, EGS4, and MCNP-4C of the accelerator neutron production wil be carried out to facilite the interpretation of the results obtained by the multisphere system, to localise points or zones within the accelerator plant with elevated neutron flux, and to determine the optimum shielding material for future installations with similar characteristics. This project together with the rest of works that perform other groups of our country will let us to be in a favourable national level to carry out a critical mass able to confort the field of neutron spectrometry and any of its application in the different areas of Science, Medicine and Industry
