Project Details
Description
The aim of the present project is to established several shallow benthic zones (SBZ) using larger foraminifera to characterise in time the Upper Cretaceous neritic sediments. Abundance, diversity, and high evolutionary rates make larger foraminifera extraordinary useful biostratigraphic tools for datation of the sediments deposited in shallow marine platforms. The biozones will be established following the same criteres of those used in the definition of Lower Paleogene Shallow Bentic Zones, where each SBZ biozone corresponds to the "total range zone" of some larger foraminifera taxa, and is defined using integrated evidence of multiple first appearances (FA's) and last occurrences (LO's) of taxa from all neritic available paleoenvionments, from litoral to the lower limit of the photic zone (limit of the larger foraminifera bearing symbionts). The larger foraminifera zones will be named SBZ, initial of Shallow Benthic Zones. The larger foraminifera, calcareous nannoplankton and ammonites zones.
