The global orthopaedic and dental implants markets are growing rapidly, in part due to a growing geriatric population, increased incidence of injuries and tooth loss, and a growing demand for cosmetic surgery. Implant-associated infections are a serious problem that can have severe consequences including septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in the case of Staph infections after bone implant surgery. Given the increasing public health challenge associated with antimicrobial resistance, infections are becoming even more dangerous. BIOREMIA brings together a critical mass of academic and industrial expertise to train doctoral students in the multidisciplinary techniques required to address bacterial infections following implants. BIOREMIA plans to jump-start successful careers for young researchers while contributing to the health and well-being of those with implants.
