Description

Stratigraphical correlation is one of the main goals of the International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP, IUGS-UNESCO) and the main one of the International Commision on Stratigraphy (ICS, IUGS), itself organised in subcommisions for each geological period. Biostratigraphy is one of the main tools for stratigraphical correlation. The main aim of this project is to establish an high resolution integrate biostratigraphical framework for the Upper Cretaceous, usable both for basin and platform sediments and for different palaeobiogeographical regions, for that reason research will be carried on: 1) taxonomy of biostratigraphically useful macrofossils: species succession of Tisotids, Muniericeratids and Bostrichoceratids in ammonites; phylogeny of the genus Cataceramus, Endocostea, Selenoceramus, Tethyceramus and Trochoceramus in inoceramids; cladistic analysis in Radiolitidae and Hippuritidae, considering also North-African and American faunas, in rudists; species succession of genus Micraster in echinoids; and revision of Thecideida and Rynchonellidae in brachiopods. 2) biostratigraphy: establishment of integrate biozones for basin, distal and proximal platform; correlation between them and with the standard zones. 3) palaeobiogeography, with sepcial emphasis in Tethyan-Boreal and Mediterranean-American relationship.
