Project Details


The MAGIC Collaboration has buit in teh last years a unique instrument for detection of gamma radiation from galactic and extragalactic sources. The MAGI telescope I can detect the Cherenkov radiation produced in the atmospheric air showers due to the high energy cosmic radiation (30 GeV - 1 TeV) bombarding the Earth's atmosphere. The telescope has 17 m diameter and incorporates new techniques that make possible to measure gamma radiation with the lowest energy threshold accessible to a ground based telescope. At present, the telescope that was inaugurated in October 2003, is taking data regularly. The second step in the technological developments of the MAGIC collaboration is to buid and run a second telescope, similar to the first one, named MAGIC II. This second telescope will incorporate a camera equipped with photosensors of high quantum efficiency (>50 %), digitization units of 2 GHz and all the improvements which can be done on the design of the first telescope. The UCM and UAB group of the MAGIC Collaboration formed the MAGIC pulsar working group for the search and study of pulsars. This project ask for budget to maintain and get data from MAGIC I and to contribute to the construction of MAGIC II. Their foreseen contribution to MAGIC II hardware will be devoted to the new camera (Madrid group will build prototypes for the complete detection and transmission chain of a pixel of the new camera) and to the reflector (UAB group will contribute to the newly designed mirrors for MAGIC II)
