The project we propose attempts two main purposes: a) to compile an exhaustive and selective bibliographical information about the theory and criticisms of the visual arts in Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands between 1600 and 1936, and b) to initiate research into some of the most important and less known aspects of the theory and criticism in this period. For example, we can take into account the contributions of Vicente Victoria or Gregorio Mayans, or the historiography and criticism previous to Catalan Modernism, or the criticism of the Catalan movement of noucentisme. Our second purpose aims to stablish an appropiate and plural methodological aspect of our cultural and artistic history. We consider that only with a work that extends to the double way, cataloguing and analysis, we can acquire in a mid-term a coherent and overall view.
