Environmental education will be a priority area within the nineties as pointed by recent research developments in the area of Science Education. A new" ecological culture" based on the understanding of ecosystems functioning is presently emerging. This new culture is at the centre of what is called environmental education. Many new environmental curricula are being designed lacking research support. These curricula do not generally contemplate research to both investigate the adequacy of activities included and evaluate their effectiveness. More specifically there is a lack of knowledge about whether environmental education in successful in developing students' knowledge and modifying students' behaviour and attitudes. The new Spanish school science curricula are aiming at promoting science learning through environmental education. Consequently it is of paramount importance to start a new area of research within science education which will assist in the process of designing and implementing the new promoted curricula through research and evaluation
