Project Details

Early intervention based on interaction between the newborn and his parents is considered today the most effective method, that, behind the medical treatments, improve dramatically the early development of the premature newborn. But previously is necessary to establish the behavioural profile of each newborn and our purpose is to elaborate an adequate instrument. The objectives of this project are: a) The revision of the APIB (Assessment of the Preterm Infants' Behaviour) and elaboration of the spanish version. B) Standardization of the APIB-Spanish Version and c) Elaboration of a screening Test to assess the behavioral outcome of the premature newborn to be used in the Newborn Intensive Care Units (NICU). For the standardization process, we will assess with the APIB Scale-Spanish version, a sample of 200 preterm newborns stratified into two postmenstrual age groups: 100 early born preterms, EBPT (27 to 32 weeks) and 100 middle-group preterms, MGPT (33 to 37 weeks). The newborns of the EBPT group will be assessed at 32 weeks and infants of the MGPT at 37 weeks. For the predictive validity abalyses process, a sample of 100 newborns (50 from each group) will be randomly selected among the normative sample and they will be-assessed at 40 postmenstrual weeks with de Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, NBAS (Spanish version adapted by our team and published by Paidós, 1997) The Screening Test to be used in our NICU will be elaborated with a selection of the highest predictive value items
