Given a group acting on a topological space, information may be obtained about the group and the space; the most interesting case arises from the fundamental group of a connected CW-complex acting on the universal cover, which in the aspherical case is closely related to the cohomology of the group. This area of research is currently very active, and Stallings, Thurston, Bestvina, Dunwoody, Gromov, etc. have developed powerful new techniques. Our object is to continue these lines of investigation and to try and answer various specific questions in dimensions 1, 2 and 3.
