Project Details


Study objective: to test whether the ability of ensheathing glia to promote the regeneration of some sensory fibers, can be generalized. Check that the regenerated fibers do engage in functional synaptic relations. Design: a pluridisciplinar study, using techniques of cell culture, microscopy (optical and electron), electrophysiology and behavior. Setting: repair of damaged nerve fibers in chosen loci of the adult nervous system. Subjects: mammals of species ranging from rodent to pig. Interventions: well-defined surgical lesions (sciatic and pelvic nerve transection; dorsal root transection; internuclear neuron axotomy in the external ocular motor nucleus). Measurements: yield, in the culture and purification of ensheathing glia. Use of these glial cells to enhance the repair (anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioral) of damaged neural circuits.
